As anyone who has ever lived on the east end of Long Island knows, Suffolk County offers a lot to visitors and residents who enjoy water-related activities. This includes surfing at Smith Point, kayaking in the Peconic River or fishing off the coast of the North Shore in the waters of the Long Island Sound. Residents and visitors alike have access to yet another recreational activity that is so central to the identity and character of the island now that the Long Island Aquarium is open to the public.
As Adam Kutner has noted before, the aquarium is located well east of New York City and deep in the heart of Suffolk County. This has not kept visitors from the city and beyond from making the trek out to the aquarium to see all of the diverse marine life it has to offer.
The aquarium has even been featured in an episode of a forthcoming NBC comedy, and though the episode has yet to air on the major cable network, the publicity from the shoot has helped to elevate the aquarium’s status to those outside of Suffolk County.
Residents, however, have known what visitors are only just beginning to realize, that the aquarium is a wonderful attraction and is worth visiting on multiple occasions. With Long Island’s long history and status as a community obsessed with the marine life that surrounds it, it is only natural that the aquarium would be a popular destination among the residents of the densely populated island.
